Karaoke
brings back memories for local seniors
When is karaoke more than just a bunch
of songs being sung? When it is songs being sung that
transport you to a different place and time. That is
just what Jan and Friends do the 3rd Tuesday of each
month as they put on a lively karaoke party at the Atwater
Cherish site where seniors 60 and over are entertained
with music from bygone eras and even a few of the newer
songs. Songs such as “Let’s Dance,”
“Welcome to My World,” “Rockin’
Robin,” and “My Way” are performed
by the different volunteers who are a part of this group.
Even a few of the staff that got in the spirit of it
all and took the mic to sing or joined others on the
dance floor.
Al Codd says he is can’t carry a tune but he likes
to dance so, while the others are performing, he invites
various ladies in the audience to join him on the dance
floor. “It’s a great way to get some exercise,”
Codd says and, by the smiles on their faces, it’s
a great way to feel alive!
The monthly karaoke party is from 10 am to 12 noon and
is just one of the many activities that are provided
to Atwater seniors in addition to being served a hot
lunch. Bingo, special speakers, table games, musical
entertainment, health discussions and more can be found
on the calendar each month and offer opportunities to
socialize, make friends and be entertained. The group
meets Monday through Friday in the fellowship hall of
the United Methodist Church at 2550 Linden Ave. Lunch
is served those days for a suggested donation of $2.00
for seniors who are 60 and over and must be ordered
the day prior by callingApril at 358-0681.
