Disc Golfers Now can Play in Merced

MERCED – The City of Merced has opened a Disc Golf Course for public use.The Disc Golf Course is located in Farhens Park on Buena Vista Drive, just across from San Francisco Street.

The idea of a Disc Golf Course came about when the City was creating a Recreation Master Plan. A member of the public suggested the course and it was included in the plan. Interest levels in the course have grown.

Disc Golf is similar to regular golf in that the player starts at a tee and aims for a given hole. The goal is to complete each hole with the fewest number of strokes. Baskets are used to catch the discs.

The 9-hole Merced course is easy for beginners at the moment because it doesn’t have many obstructions. However, trees and other obstacles have been planted and will be growing out, increasing the challenge to players.

Fairways vary from 209 feet to 351feet

All 9 holes of the course are par 3

City dedicating park named for Rudolf Joseph Merino

MERCED – The City of Merced dedicated a park in memory of former Councilman Rudolph Joseph Merino. Ceremonies at the park, located on the corner of Pacific and El Redondo drives, was at noon, Friday, Nov. 2.

The 8-acre neighborhood park has a ball field with dugouts, a basketball court, playground equipment, walking paths, picnic and barbecue areas and a restroom.

In those days, kids would follow his truck to get piece of ice that he gave them for a treat.

Marie Louise Moschitto suggested naming the park after her former coworker. “He had a perfect attendance and never missed a meeting in 11 years,” she said. “Joe was a plain, humble, hardworking blue-collar man.”

She cited Mr. Merino’s work to get the swimming pool at McNamara Park, the zoo improvements he lobbied for at Applegate Park and his advocacy for streets and sidewalks in South Merced.

Mr. Merino served on the Council from 1946 to 1957 and was a strong advocate for the City Charter, which was adopted in 1949.

He died in Merced at age 84. He was survived by his wife, Mary, and his children, Rudy and Delores.

Mr. Merino worked for Union Ice, and later for Merced Dairy and Ice, she said. In those days, kids would follow his truck to get piece of ice that he gave them for a treat.

Ray Lopez brought his restored 1930 Ford truck used during the days of delievering ice in the Merced community. Joe delievered ice in a truck simular to this one. Ray and his son, David restored the truck to the memory of Joe Merino and to the preservation of the history of the city of Merced.

The truck carried 300 pound blocks of ice, which was cut into small blocks and sold by the pound to each home.

CYCLING

BIKEWAYS
The City of Merced has one of the finest city bikeway systems in the nation and has recently added a number of new lanes and routes to this extensive system. North-South includes "G" Street, "R" Street, and "V" Street. East-West on street lanes are Childs Avenue, 13th Street, East Main Street, and Yosemite Avenue. Bicyclists can follow a route to just about any area in the City. We're particularly proud of the Class I bike paths along Bear Creek and Black Rascal Creek. Each of these bikepaths extends from McKee Road (east) to Highway 59 (west). Detailed maps are available at the Parks and Community Services Office.
