| MERCED
COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL CURRENT EXHIBITS
Bob Nugent, Jennifer Maria Harris
& Mahara T. Sinclair April 7 through June 2, 2008
The Merced County Arts Council welcomes
three artists, each exhibiting their own show, on display
through April 7 through June 2, 2008. A reception will
be held for the artists Friday April 11 from 5-7pm at
The Merced Multicultural Arts Center. All are welcome
to attend.
In the Main Gallery, Bob Nugent's work
refers to his Brazilian travels. Larger than life and
subdued by a layer of darkness, Nugent's pieces show
naturalistic forms resembling beehives, vertebrae, cocoons,
anthills and plant forms. Of his travels, Nugent says,
"these impressions are a memory of the river bound
on both sides by a high, dark jungle, foreboding and
beautiful. If it takes you in, it takes you in whole."
In the Skylight Gallery on the 2nd
floor, Jennifer Maria Harris exhibits work in three
media: painting, archival digital print and a multimedia
installation, united by an exploration of the ways we
are influenced by the stories we tell to each other
and to ourselves. Of her work, Harris says it, "explores
my fascination with how we relate to the stories in
our lives-and to the stories of our lives. I enjoy creating
characters who seem ready to walk out of their worlds
and into ours, as well as inviting us to step into theirs."
In the White Box Gallery on the 2nd
floor, Sinclair's Alice and Friends intends to impact
humanity's expressive development by articulating emotional
terrain, thereby demystifying it and facilitating the
individual's self-acceptance. Sinclair uses Lewis Carroll's
infamous Alice in Wonderland books as a vehicle for
social critique, and feels this is precisely what is
at the core of Carroll's agenda. In the playful nature
of the work, Sinclair adds, "It is pertinent to
mention that the facial expressions in my work are derived
from Polaroid self-portraits, and as such, make fun
of myself, in truth, not others."
Bob Nugent, Jennifer Maria Harris and
Mahara T. Sinclair are on display through May at the
Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main Street
in downtown Merced. A reception for the artists will
be held Friday April 11 from 5-7pm at the Center. Galleries
are free and open to the public Mon-Fri. 10-4pm and
Sat. 10-2pm. For more information contact the Merced
County Arts Council at 209-388-1090 or on the web at
