CLASSICAL ENCOUTERS FOUNDATION Presents
ART, MUSIC & WINE
Original Paintings and Music

TARZANA, CA - On February 18th from 2:30 to 4:30 a public art show is being presented featuring the paintings of Sonia Levitin and Karen Lee Fisher. Proceeds from the sale of art will raise needed funds for the Classical Encounters Foundation, which provides scholarships to music students and hosts intimate “concert hall quality” classical music performances in private homes - giving both the performers and the attendees a unique and interactive opportunity. Performing at the event will be Timothy Lewis, an accomplished pianist, graduate student at CSUN, and a recipient of the Classical Encounters Foundation’s annual scholarship. Curated by UCLA student and humanitarian Anthony A. Angelini, the art show and concert is free of charge and will be held at a private home located at 19365 Lemmer Dr. in Tarzana, CA.
Sonia Levitin is a multi-faceted artist and Holocaust survivor. Her 43 published books have won many literary awards here and abroad. Her play, SURIVING MAMA, and a musical, RETURN were staged in Los Angeles. Her career as an artist began at the age of 12, when she sold her first painting to a fellow guest at a California spa she was visiting with her parents. The payment of $35 was staggering to the young girl, and she continued to paint throughout the years, while teaching, writing and raising a family. More recently, her increased occupation as a painter has yielded a large and varied output. Sonia’s paintings reflect her interest in contrast, the themes of inner and outer space, as in her “windows” series, geographic forms overflowing with animals, flowers and objects. Some of the paintings are traditional, nostalgic scenes; others are abstract expressionist on the themes of creation, joy, and colorful geometric figures that tell a story. In her paintings, she uses various mediums to achieve texture and balance—ink, water color, charcoal, acrylic, chalk and pastel. “Each painting is a new experience, a surprise, as I am constantly experimenting with new forms and new materials to achieve that undefinable sense of completeness when a painting “works,” says Levitin.
Karen Lee Fisher was born in Baltimore, Maryland. At the age of twelve, while her peers were outside playing hide and go seek, she would spend hours in her room drawing and painting. At the age of 16, Karen attended the Maryland Institute, College of Art and was awarded the Ferguson Merit Scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Lauda with a BFA in Art Education and Photography. After graduating in 1976, she taught in the Baltimore City Public School system until 1979 and then moved to San Francisco to teach in the public schools. In 1984, she moved to Los Angeles. In 1997, she became the art teacher at Gindi Maimonides Academy. In 2015, she also became the art teacher at Harkham Gaon Academy in Los Angeles. Karen paints inner landscapes and uses color to create the illusion of space. She paints a world of stillness and balance, reflecting her passion for yoga and meditation. “Art helps express my deep feelings for beauty, life, and love,” says Fisher. “By creating art, I feel complete and learn more about my own abilities and feelings. Art is a conscious and unconscious journey. Through art, I feel life; I feel its pulse, its rhythm, its music, and its silence.”
Timothy Lewis, a recipient of the Classical Encounters Foundation scholarship, is a soloist, collaborative artist, curator, and advocate for experimental and community-oriented music. Over the past few years he has appeared in solo and chamber recitals in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, and across the United States. He is also a prizewinner in competitions in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and California. A deeply committed educator, Timothy has performed and taught in schools throughout the Midwest and Los Angeles in an effort to give young people and adults the tools to engage in civic life. Last year he developed and presented a series of lectures on twentieth-century music at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. His recent studies encompass an eclectic array of topics, including analytical methods of Claude Debussy’s Préludes, music-text relationships in the lieder of Johannes Brahms, and the sonic meditations of Pauline Oliveros. Upcoming projects include performances of Barber’s Hermit Songs and Schubert’s Die Winterreise, Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, and a solo recital featuring works by Mozart, Debussy, Berg, Chopin, and Scriabin. Timothy received his Bachelor of Music degree at Ball State University, where he studied with Robert Palmer, and he is now working toward his Master of Music degree with Dmitry Rachmanov at California State University Northridge.
Classical Encounters Foundation was formed to provide an opportunity for outstanding musicians to perform in the welcoming atmosphere of an elegant private home with two of the best Steinway grand pianos in the city of Los Angeles. This type of intimate setting is more impressive and moving than a concert hall because the audience is small and sits very close to the performer.

“Our concert series benefits the musicians because they are able to communicate their music with an appreciative audience, and earn some money too,” says founder Ronna Binn-Hersh. “It also benefits the community at large as a meeting place for like-minded people to enjoy a concert in an intimate and inviting atmosphere and to make new friends.” After the program, light refreshments are served and the audience is able to socialize and meet the performers. Classical Encounters Foundation also hosts graduate recitals for students from local colleges and awards scholarships.
Angelini Entertainment will produce the event under the curation of Anthony Angelini, a humanitarian and activist who was recently honored as Outstanding Volunteer by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Angelini has been heavily involved in political activism and humanitarian work both in the Los Angeles area and abroad. He serves on the board of Gold Coast Performing Arts Association, Animal Foundation of America, and A New Dimension of Hope, for whom he traveled to a rural village in Liberia, West Africa, to open a school. He placed the first book, "Oh! The Places You'll Go!" on the shelf and gave the dedication speech. Angelini has curated three art shows for Levitin and Fisher as well as several other local art events in the Los Angeles area.
