FEBRUARY

Starting February 10, 2012

Friday, February 10, 7 pm
Better This World (2011, 93 minutes)

A dramatic story of idealism, loyalty, crime, and betrayal, the film goes to the heart of the “war on terror” and its impact on civil liberties and political dissent in the United States after 9/11. The film illustrates how the facts needed to justify investigations of terrorism suspects have been greatly reduced over the past several years.

Friday, February 17, 7 pm
This is my Land…Hebron (2010, 70 minutes)

Featuring interviews with both Israelis and Palestinians living in Hebron, as well as activists on both sides, members of the Israeli parliament and prominent Ha’aretz journalists, the film lifts the lid on Hebron as it is today - a city fraught with violence and hate. Hebron is the largest city in the occupied West Bank, home to 160,000 Palestinians. It is also home to one of the first Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the only one right in the heart of a Palestinian city.

Friday, February 24, 7 pm
The Price of Sex (2010, 73 minutes)

Special event: Meet filmmaker Mimi Chakarova
This is an intimate and revealing documentary about young Eastern European women who have been drawn into a world of sex trafficking and abuse. It is a story told by the young women who refused to be silenced by shame, fear, and violence. Emmy-nominated photojournalist Mimi Chakarova, who grew up in Bulgaria, takes us on a personal journey, exposing the shadowy world of sex trafficking from Eastern Europe to the Middle East and Western Europe. Chakarova illuminates how even though some women escape to tell their stories, sex trafficking thrives.

Gallery on the Square celebrates its first anniversary with the first new show of 2012 by painter Angela Corpora. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday February 17th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. All are invited to stop by and check out this great painter’s work.

Also displaying work in the Gallery are artist's Jay Sousa, Renate Stolte, Cheryl Barnett, Tim Grimes, Monika Modest, Keith Law and Oscar Torres.

Angela Corpora is from Merced California and is currently finishing her BFA at California State University Stanislaus. Her art is very personal, and she works in various media such as oil, acrylic, nupastel, conte’, and mix media. Most of her work focuses on themes related to the constructions of womanhood, aging, and religion, both positive and negative, based on her childhood and adulthood. Corpora is currently investigating using paint on canvas to uncover her unconscious. She resides in Merced California with her husband and daughter.

Gallery on the Square is located at 1636 Canal St. in downtown Merced (on Bob Hart Square).
