The Merced
County Arts Council is pleased to welcome two new exhibits
to the Merced Multicultural Arts Center.
In the Main Gallery, Tamar Assaf underscores the unique
and significant role that animals play in the Old Testament—the
base of three major monotheistic religions. In the Skylight
and White Box Galleries, high school students from throughout
Merced County will show off their amazing talent through
an array of mediums, including watercolor, pastel, graphite,
mixed media and more.
Tamar Assaf’s, “Animals of the Bible”
will be displayed in the Main Gallery. Not just a collection
of paintings, “this project is an exploration of
the intricacies and complexities associated with the role
animals play in the Old Testament, investigating linguistic
and translation influences relating to how the meaning
of animal references changed and evolved, over time and
across cultures,” says Assaf. The exhibit is at
once thoughtful and whimsical—perfect for all ages
and interests.
On the second floor of the Arts Center, Merced Union High
School District’s visual art students exhibit some
of their finest work. Keeping the Arts Center’s
tradition to showcase the community’s up-and-coming
artists, this show is most of the students’ first
opportunity to show in a professional gallery, as well
as to interact with a wider public audience. This show
would not be possible without the cooperation and dedication
of the high school art teachers, who work tirelessly to
keep theis students engaged in the community. |

“Animals
of the Bible” and Merced Union High School District
students artists’ reception Thursday, February 16,
5:30 to 7pm at Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W
Main Street in downtown Merced. Open to the public beginning
February 8, Wednesday – Thursday 11am – 7pm
and Friday – Saturday 10am- 5pm. Entrance is free.
